The theme for this year’s national campaign is “The Culture of Dying Matters”, which encourages all communities to explore how they talk about death, grief, and the care we give and receive at the end of life.
At The QEH, the conversation is being shaped not just in words, but in action.
Since opening in December 2024, the Peddars Way Unit has provided a dedicated, peaceful, and dignified environment for patients in their final hours and days. The £1.6 million purpose-built unit, entirely funded through donations to the QEHKL Charity, features five en-suite bedrooms – each designed to offer a calm, home-like space for patients and their loved ones.
The unit has already received heartfelt praise from families:
“The care was absolutely brilliant – the service and treatment received was next to none and the kindness from staff was exemplary.”
“We feel extremely lucky for him to have been cared for on the unit – we could not wish for him to be cared for anywhere else.”
“They made us feel at home and were so attentive to mum. The calm relaxed atmosphere was so settling. This dedicated unit is an asset to the hospital.”
Alice Webster, CEO at The QEH, said: “Dying Matters Awareness Week is a reminder that how we talk about and approach death is just as important as the care we provide. The Peddars Way Unit represents our hospital’s deep commitment to compassion, dignity, and comfort for patients at the end of life.
“We are incredibly proud of the difference this unit has made in just five months – thanks to the generosity of our community and the dedication of our exceptional staff. These touching words from families show the true value of having a space that honours the final chapter of life with the respect it deserves.”
Named after the ancient Norfolk trail, the Peddars Way Unit features five nature-inspired rooms – Blossom, Lavender, Meadow, Oak, and Willow – with bespoke artwork and soothing design. It was officially opened in December 2024 by Nicola Ellis, Chief Executive of Tapping House hospice, recognising the partnership that helped shape its development.
As part of Dying Matters Week, The QEH is encouraging conversations within the hospital and the wider community about end-of-life planning, emotional support, and the diverse ways we experience grief across cultures and backgrounds.
