Thirteen members of the Stroke Rehabilitation Team have joined together to walk two marathons over two days in aid of their patients. Gemma Pointer , Sarah O’Brian, Lauren Belcher, Scott Ablett, Cilla Williams, Deana Brooke, Amelia Turner, Lilly Hardy, Jemima Rae, Laura Fisher, Alistair Follen, Dean Dryden and Ella Hamilton are aiming to complete this immense challenge on the first weekend of October.
The team wanted to raise funds for both a new rehabilitation exercise bicycle and a a reading space for speech and language therapy.
Ella-louise Hamilton, a Speech and Language therapist on the ward shared; “Following a stroke that has caused damage to the language centres in the brain, people can develop aphasia. Aphasia can impact a person’s ability to understand others, think of the words they want to say, as well as reading and writing.
“Reading can make a difference to how well a person can participate in society in addition to being a social activity. We would like to provide a reading space for patients on West Raynham with accessible material that is appropriate to their level of function. Reading material might include: newspapers/magazines, picture books, adapted novels, short stories, audiobooks, large print books and digital books. We wish to use some of the money raised to fund these resources. The hope is that the library may help to support their language recovery in addition to providing the social benefits that come with engagement of reading.”
